I3-SPACE Approved for Funding to Accelerate the Commercialisation of European Space Technologies

BGT Consulting Group is pleased to announce the approval for funding of I3-SPACE – Interregional Investments Projects Accelerating Commercial Exploitation of Earth-Observation and Space Technologies, a new European initiative under the Interregional Innovation Investments (I3) Instrument.

I3-SPACE will accelerate interregional innovation investment, market uptake and the commercial exploitation of Earth Observation (EO), Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) and space-enabled services, strengthening Europe’s competitiveness, technological autonomy and resilience within the rapidly evolving space economy.

Coordinated by the AIR Centre, the project brings together 15 partners from eight EU countries, Portugal, Italy, Poland, Latvia, Greece, Slovenia, Croatia and the Netherlands, connecting complementary capabilities and regional innovation ecosystems across Europe.

From technological innovation to market deployment

Despite Europe’s strong capabilities in space technologies, several barriers continue to limit the wider commercial adoption of EO- and GNSS-based solutions. These include fragmented regional ecosystems, difficulties in accessing investment and scaling innovative solutions, regulatory complexity, and limited market uptake.

I3-SPACE will address these challenges by developing and validating a coordinated portfolio of business cases across four strategic application areas:

  • AgriTech & Water Management
  • Blue & Coastal Intelligence
  • Urban & Climate Intelligence
  • Forestry & Environmental Risk

Through regional intelligence mapping, pilot demonstrations, market validation and business development activities, the project will support promising technologies in progressing from technical readiness towards wider commercial deployment.

Creating opportunities for European SMEs

A key component of I3-SPACE will be its cascade-funding scheme, which will support 20 additional SMEs in testing, integrating and adopting EO- and GNSS-based solutions. This approach will help reduce market-entry barriers while strengthening interregional space value chains across Europe.

By bringing together companies, research organisations, innovation intermediaries and regional stakeholders from regions at different levels of development, I3-SPACE aims to foster stronger innovation flows, generate new investment opportunities and deliver tangible economic impact across Europe’s strategic space ecosystem.

The approval of I3-SPACE represents an important step towards strengthening the connection between space innovation, investment and market deployment, helping innovative European technologies move closer to commercial applications and supporting the continued growth of Europe’s space economy.
